You and your colleagues are invited to attend the 6th Annual Arizona Extreme Heat Planning Workshop facilitated by the Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and the National Weather Service. Last year’s workshop engaged representatives from academia, businesses, elected officials, emergency management, government, media, non-profit, tribes, public safety, and meteorology. In hopes of easily engaging partners from across the state, we will continue with the virtual format for 2022.
Arizona’s 2021 heat season (May-Sep) was the 4th warmest on record. Despite the number of extreme heat days being slightly fewer than average and a typical number of Excessive Heat Warning days, impacts remained at all-time highs. Preliminary heat deaths exceeded historical records in Arizona for the second year in a row, at nearly 550.
Goals for the webinar:
- Explore historical and the most recent projected temperature trends for Arizona.
- Examine current trends in heat illness and deaths.
- Establish, renew, and strengthen connections within the community of those responding to extreme heat.
- Highlight tangible progress to combating and mitigating extreme heat.
- Explore topics more deeply through facilitated workgroup sessions.
